Yes, beauty is more than skin deep. However, for those who suffer from skin issues, it can certainly feel like beauty is only for those with good lighting.

We know that’s not the case! Firstly, please know you’re gorgeous. Secondly, you’re not alone in suffering from acne — 85% of teenagers and up to 40% of adults have acne.

And thirdly, if you happen to have acne, there is help! Acupuncture can help relieve the inflammation and work from the inside out to give you the complexion you’ve been wanting.

How is acupuncture good for acne?

Acupuncture treatments are effective because they treat more than the symptoms of acne. When acupuncture is used for acne, it targets specific areas of the body that are known to trigger digestion and the immune system and to reduce inflammation. It also works on regulating your body’s internal structures, organs and functions, as well as balancing hormone levels.

There’s been years of research behind this as well. In 2009, Tianjin University of TCM in China looked at 1,613 case studies about acne and acupuncture conducted over a period of 40 years. After evaluating the studies in combination with western medicine studies, the researchers found that found acupoint stimulation treatments were as effective, and possibly more effective, than many Western acne treatment methods. Acupuncture treatments do not have painful side effects, like bleached skin, itchy skin, or flaking skin, which can occur with many traditional treatments.

Restoring the body’s balance is key, and paying attention to your diet will also aid in clearing acne. Increasing Omega-3 levels, and vitamin A and D, (they’re antiproliferative, which means they stop the growth of malignant cells) will help. Vitamin D is also helpful for reducing autoimmune disorders, and lowering the rate of infectious diseases.

Chances are — You’re dehydrated! 

For beings that are mostly water, it’s surprising how many people aren’t getting what they need!

Water is so important to our body. Water fills empty spaces and transports blood cells. It dissolves all the body solids and increases oxygen to the cells. It is the glue that keeps the solid parts of cells together. It is the main source of energy production and also regulates energy by osmotic balancing. Everything in your body needs water to live. 

Unfortunately, thirst isn’t always a reliable source of the body’s need for water, especially for children and older adults. Water is lost from the body from sweating, urinating, breathing, and bowel movements. Consider your personal color instead  — a better gauge is the color of your urine. Clear or light-colored urine means you’re well hydrated, whereas a dark yellow or amber color usually signals dehydration. Time to drink more water!

Here’s what can happen if you don’t…

Mild to moderate dehydration is likely to cause:

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual
  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output
  • No wet diapers for three hours for infants
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Severe dehydration, a medical emergency, can cause:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Extreme fussiness or sleepiness in infants and children; irritability and confusion in adults
  • Very dry mouth, skin and mucous membranes
  • Little or no urination — any urine that is produced will be darker than normal
  • Sunken eyes
  • Shriveled and dry skin that lacks elasticity and doesn’t “bounce back” when pinched into a fold
  • In infants, sunken fontanels — the soft spots on the top of a baby’s head
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Rapid breathing
  • No tears when crying
  • Fever
  • In the most serious cases, delirium or unconsciousness

So obviously, we need to pay attention to our hydration levels! Here’s more reasons why water is so important to our bodies.

The following organs as important team players in the role of creating and moving blood: Spleen, Stomach, Heart, Lung, and Liver. Blood needs water to move. If blood does not function properly, then qi (or Life Force) cannot move well either. 

When an acupuncture needle is inserted, it results in increased heat, which results in increased blood flow, and it results in an increase in water to the damaged cells that cause pain. By increasing the content of water to the damaged cells cellular healing occurs.

Are you looking for relief from that fun in the sun aftermath? 

Summertime. Sunshine. Sunburn…acupuncture!

It’s not necessarily the first thing you think about when you are wondering what on earth will speed up the healing process of sunburn, but acupuncture will not only help soothe the pain, it will make you feel more relaxed in the process!

How do you know you have sunburn? You know you’ve been in the sun too long if your skin looks pink or red, feels hot to the touch, or is painful. Once you feel this, however, it’s likely too late. Most sunburn symptoms don’t show until a few hours after exposure, but the full extent of the burn may not appear for a day or more.  

When you get a sunburn, you might experience redness, blisters, pain, swelling, itching, chills, headache, fever, dehydration and nausea. And if you make a habit of getting them, prolonged and repeated sunburns can cause aging of the skin, loss of skin elasticity, and greatly increase your risk of skin cancer.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, sunburn is a trapping of damp heat in the skin that must be treated by releasing the heat and soothing the accompanying pain. In addition, acupuncture can also give the immune system a boost, and relieve the general fatigue and malaise often present after a major sun exposure. 

Besides aftercare, a little prevention goes a very long way — here’s some great advice for more fun than burning in the sun…

Tips For Avoiding Sunburn
  • Seems simple…avoid the sun when it’s at super strength. Don’t stay out for long periods of time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you’re outdoors during this time, keep in mind that you’ll burn faster than at other times of the day.
  • Beware of reflective surfaces. Water or sand can bounce as much as 17% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays back at you. 
  • Wear clothing that will  protect you from the sun. If you’ve been out in the sun for a while and want to protect your skin, use clothing such as cover-ups, long, loose-fitting pants and tops, and wide-brimmed hats. Choose lightweight fabrics that are cool, but will still give you sun protection. Remember your sunglasses (sunburned eyes…it can happen).

  • Wear sunblock! Sunblock will protect your skin from the sun’s rays, but be aware that many contain questionable chemicals that are not typically regulated. Choose natural varieties from your health food store, and be sure to reapply the sunblock if you have been in the water or have been sweating. 
  • Be shady! A simple way to avoid sunburn is to go in a shaded area to get out of the sun. If a shaded area (such as under a tree) is not available, use an umbrella. It will also make it easier for your friends and family to locate you on the beach! Win/win!
