When gardening, about 80 to 90 percent of the movement is in a bent position which is unnatural on the body and, when prolonged, can lead to lower-back pain. Repetitive bending, reaching, twisting, and lifting – all actions common to gardening, and even light digging, planting, weeding, and mulching over the course of a long gardening season – tend to put the lower-lumbar area of the back at risk.

Here’s some more advice to take good care of your back during the gardening season.

  • To prevent overstretching your back, warm up before you start. Try taking a walk around the block, to loosen up your limbs, or a hot shower.
  • Even when you’re warmed up, it’s still possible to injure your back. Repetitive motions and lifting heavy objects improperly are definitely risky garden business for backs. Don’t bend and twist when lifting something heavy!
  • Try switching tasks every 15 minutes, and use knee pads when pulling weeds and planting. Lift with your legs and keep your back straight.
