From a broken bone to tendonitis to nerve compression or bruising, the causes of arm pain are many and varied. Sometimes neck problems can cause a pinched nerve, resulting in pain in the arm. Other times, a sports injury can leave tendons inflamed and tender. Regardless of the source of pain and the severity of the injury, acupuncture will touch on points specific to the particular cause and can improve circulation while promoting healing. We work with you to compile a health history to determine the cause and then develop a treatment plan to resolve that particular issue. Often long-term arm pain can dissolve with just a few sessions!
Arm Pain—sports injury
When arm pain results from a sports injury, it can take a long time to heal, especially where ligaments or tendons are concerned. Sometimes, because of repeated use of the arm, connective tissues don’t ever have a chance to heal properly. In these cases, an athlete may come to the conclusion that an injury is permanent. This is mistaken thinking. All connective tissue can heal properly when given the chance and supported in the healing process. Acupuncture can speed up the healing process by returning the natural energy flow to the affected area of the body so that your arm can heal, even while you’re using it!
In the case of elbow pain, also called tennis elbow, the forearm muscles and tendons are stressed. As a result, tendonitis, bursitis or arthritis can develop. Repeated hand, wrist or forearm movements – playing tennis, gardening, throwing, typing or even playing the piano – can cause inflammation of the connective tissues surrounding the elbow. Acupuncture on points specific to the elbow can effectively heal the connective tissues, reducing the pain. Acupuncture also releases endorphins that soothe the pain while stimulating circulation and the bodies own healing abilities.
Arm Pain—carpal tunnel syndrome
As in elbow pain, carpal tunnel syndrome results when the wrist and forearm are stressed. This often occurs with repeated motions of the hand. The median nerve enters the hand through a narrow area called the carpal tunnel. Swelling will pinch the nerve and cause pain or numbness, often affecting the function of the hand. Many common activities can result in carpal tunnel syndrome: playing keyboard instruments, typing, writing, painting and playing racquet sports. Acupuncture on points specific to the wrist will relieve the inflammation and reduce the swelling, reversing the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and allowing renewed function of the hand and wrist.
After a short series of treatments, I was pain free
“After other medical practitioners had been unsuccessful in treating my bursitis, I had reached the point of not being able to lift my arm. I was depressed and desperate at the loss of function. I couldn’t trust the arm to perform as needed. After a short series of treatments, I was pain free and regained total use of my shoulder and the bursitis has not recurred. I, the skeptic, have become a believer in the benefits acupuncture can create. Looking for a concerned, knowledgeable specialist interested in your total health– look no further than Ingri.” — R. Wendschuh, Redding, CT
Acupuncture Spared Me From Surgery
“I had a partial tear of my rotator cuff, and my doctors wanted to do surgery. If I had done this, I would have been out of work for up to 6 to 8 months. I was working next door to Ingri’s office in Wilton, and I could not raise my arm. She said to come over after work, and I had two treatments with her. That has been about four years now, and I can move my arm in all directions with no pain at all. I do recommend this treatment.” — Gerry S., CT
Still Symptom Free 25 Years After Treatment
“I’ve been treated by you for two distinct symptoms. The first, over 15 years ago, was for a tendon sheath problem in my right arm, which prevented me from doing even everyday tasks, such as writing, lifting even light objects, and extending my arm to reach for anything. The treatment was fully effective, and I avoided costly surgery, that offered only a chance of relief. I am symptom free today, 15 years later. Currently, I am experiencing achilles tendon problems, and the course of acupuncture has allowed me to function almost fully at this time. Continued acupuncture treatments are planned as this is the best relief I have had for this ongoing issue.” — Robert, CT
