Anxiety is a completely normal human emotion. Many people feel nervous or anxious when faced with problems at work, before taking an exam, or making a difficult life decision. It’s a perfectly normal reaction to stress.
Anxiety disorders, however, are different. They can cause such distress that it interferes with someone’s ability to lead a normal life. And distress can disturb the body’s internal balance or equilibrium, leading to physical symptoms such as headaches, an upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, sexual dysfunction, and problems sleeping. Emotional problems can also result from distress.
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) occurs when someone feels worried and stressed about what could be seen as average, everyday events and activities. Often the things are small or unimportant. This type of worry can become disruptive, and affect daily life. Everyone gets worried or anxious sometimes. But people with generalized anxiety disorder experience more than normal everyday worries, and often have physical symptoms such as headaches, body aches or fatigue, among others.
The cause of generalized anxiety disorder is not known. Some studies show that it might be passed genetically, and hyperthyroidism has been shown to cause generalized anxiety symptoms.
Besides GAD, many people often suffer from panic disorder, or panic attacks. People with this condition have feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly without warning. Other symptoms of a panic attack include sweating, chest pain, palpitations (unusually strong or irregular heartbeats), and a feeling of choking, which may make the person feel like they are having a heart attack or are losing their sanity.
Also within the anxiety spectrum is social anxiety disorder, or social phobia. Social anxiety disorder brings feelings of overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about normal, everyday social situations. The worry often focuses on a fear of being judged negatively by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule. This can keep people from going out, meeting new people, moving ahead in their careers or towards their goals as they might wish.
There is no reason to suffer from anxiety alone any longer.
