Having trouble adjusting to the change of seasons?

For some, changes of season can trigger depression. The days are shorter, the nights are longer, it’s already dark or getting dark when you’re driving home from work — it’s no wonder that our bodies start reacting to the lack of light!

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects over ten million of us in the United States each year. For many, the symptoms start in the fall and carry on through the winter, although some people do suffer seasonal depression in the spring or early summer. It’s more common in women than in men, but men often suffer more severe symptoms.

While the true cause of SAD is not known, it is commonly thought that decreased melatonin levels caused from the limited exposure to sunlight in the winter are involved, as well as decreased serotonin levels which may trigger depression. 

Common symptoms of SAD may include:
  • Feelings of depression or hopelessness
  • A desire to sleep more
  • Withdrawal from social life
  • Lack of interest in activities that you normally enjoy
  • Feeling like your body is heavy, or feeling low in energy
  • Increased appetite, craving for high-carb / high-fat foods, and weight gain

As with other types of depression, SAD can get worse and lead to serious problems if it isn’t treated.

Here’s some good news — acupuncture can help! Acupuncture is one of the most time-tested treatments known to mankind. Treating depression with acupuncture has a positive and holistic effect on depressed patients, and avoids the potential side effects of traditional medication.

Fatigue is a drag. Run down, worn out, exhausted and tired, and it was supposed to be a vacation?  

Acupuncture can help!

A few of the basic reasons for fatigue are stress, not getting enough sleep (that’s an easy one to figure out), poor dietary choices, nutritional deficiencies, being on the go all of the time, and/or too little exercise.  “A body at rest, stays at rest.” 

Fatigue is also felt by people going through and/or who have gone through cancer treatments, or a long illness —  fatigue also poses a danger to sufferers because normal brain and physical activity is often compromised, in addition to a reduced quality of life.

There’s two different kinds of fatigue. Physical fatigue is indicated by a general lethargy or listlessness, while mental fatigue is characterized by a feeling of drowsiness and an inability to pay attention. Acupuncture is extraordinarily helpful with both physical and mental fatigue, as well as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)  — when the tiredness and heavy feeling won’t stop, and headaches and pain are added to the mix of exhaustion.

Acupuncture helps to improve fatigue immediately, after the first treatment. Often patients remark that for even other primary concerns, fatigue was the first improvement they noticed. 

Acupuncture isn’t just great for fatigue, it is also very helpful for treating all sleep problems, and without the troublesome side effects that some medications can cause. 

Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and cause the release of neurotransmitters.  Acupuncture also reduces insomnia through increasing nighttime endogenous melatonin secretions.

Depression doesn’t need to be worked through alone. Acupuncture can help!

The subject has been brought to light recently, and it’s certainly an important one. Depression affects so many of us, in fact, depression affects one in 10 Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

There are a large number of causes for depression, including genetics, chemical imbalances, hormone issues and other medical conditions. Depression may also be the result of a “dysregulation” of the seven emotions — joy, anger, worry, contemplation, grief, fear and shock.  Depression can occur to anyone, at any age, and to people of any race or ethnic group. 

Symptoms of depression include loss of interest or focus, fatigue, changes in eating habits and excessive sleeping, among many others. Depression causes people to lose pleasure from daily life, can complicate other medical conditions, and can even be serious enough to lead to suicide.

Clinical depression is very treatable. The most commonly used treatments are antidepressant medication, psychotherapy or a combination of the two.  The choice of treatment depends on the pattern, severity, persistence of depressive symptoms and the history of the illness.  As with many illnesses, early treatment is more effective and helps prevent the likelihood of serious recurrences.   

Acupuncture is a wonderful addition to Western treatments, and for those who wish to bypass prescription drugs,  treating depression with acupuncture has a positive and holistic effect on depressed patients, and avoids the potential side effects of traditional medication. The energy systems we work with include the Liver system and many other point sites may be used to address what we find in individual cases – based on the history and complete exam, of pulses and tongue, as well.
