Acupuncture For Pregnancy — How Is It Helpful?

Acupuncture for Fertility and Pregnancy

Acupuncture for Fertility and Pregnancy

Are you looking for a safe, effective way to boost your fertility, or ease the discomfiture of pregnancy?

Acupuncture is a safe, non-invasive and easy way to potentially increase your chances of getting pregnant, and there are many who are turning to acupuncture for fertility solutions when they are having difficulty conceiving.

Acupuncture greatly helps in curing fertility problems by encouraging follicle production, improving blood circulation and lining thickness in the uterus, improving egg quality, treating menstrual cycle disorders and improving overall health, which leads to the ability to more easily conceive and remain pregnant.

One of the ways acupuncture treatments increases fertility is by reducing stress, which is often a key factor in the fertility of both men and women. Stress can also alter sperm counts, motility, and cause impotence. Acupuncture infertility treatments counter the effects of stress and cortizol by releasing endorphins in the brain.

Acupuncture also works at stimulating the hypothalamus to effectively balance the endocrine system and its hormones and to get to the root cause of both male and female infertility. Acupuncture infertility treatments also have the added bonus of producing few or no side effects.

Once you’re pregnant, acupuncture is still very much an ally. Women experience discomfort in all stages of their pregnancy, whether it’s pelvic pain, hip pain, lower back pain or ligament pain. Acupuncture is a safe, natural and effective way to improve circulation and quell these common ailments, in addition to headache or migraine relief.

Happy Baby, Happy Mom!

Happy Baby, Happy Mom!

Speaking of discomfort, pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting are common among women, particularly in the first and second trimesters. During this time, rising levels of hormones, fatigue and stress wreak havoc on the digestive system. Acupuncture restores balance to this sensitive area and offers often immediate relief.

Acupuncture is relaxing, painless and gentle, and drug-free.  Less stress, a healthy body, balance – and the endorphins are certainly a bonus! Acupuncture helps you with your pregnancy from start to finish — a happy, healthy you…and baby!

Acupuncture Loves Your Neck! Holistic Relief for Neck Pain

Woman's Neck with OrchidAttention commuters, snow shovelers and all those suffering with neck pain — Acupuncture can help relieve stiff necks!

Sometimes shoveling Nature’s bounty, working endless hours hunched over a computer or all those hours spent commuting can be a literal pain in the neck. The neck is more subject to injury than any other portion of the spine, because of its position and range of motion, and because it plays such a vital role in the support of the head.

There are so many tendons and connecting tissue structures that enable the movement of the neck and arms, and we can also store our stress there. It is easy for nerves to get irritated in the mix, and when we add extra strain of commuting long hours or lifting endless piles of snow, this can really cause problems.

Neck pain can be mild enough so that it is a mere annoyance, or severe enough that it can interfere with quality of life. Sometimes a stiff neck occurs in conjunction with a headache.

Acupuncture can relieve both!

Studies have shown acupuncture to be effective in relieving certain types of neck pain, particularly those caused by whiplash.  In many cases, acupuncture has worked for patients whose conditions could not be solved using conventional approaches.

Let it snow! Acupuncture relieves neck pain!

Let it snow! Acupuncture relieves neck pain!

Acupuncture is very helpful and quickly so. Often relief is felt at the first treatment, and usually only a few are necessary, unless longstanding injuries are the cause, in which case more treatments will be needed. We treat local point sites, and include points at the neck area, as relieving the extra tension there gives immediate improvement.

We will look into your history of health, and include your other symptoms in our considerations. Acupuncture gives quick and steady improvement, without use of drugs, and is gentle and relaxing.

Wouldn’t it be nice to feel pain-free?

The Nose Knows – Acupuncture Relieves Sinus Pain

Acupuncture Relieves Sinus Issues -- Naturally!

Acupuncture Relieves Sinus Issues — Naturally!

Whether it’s intense pain, or an irritatingly runny nose — acupuncture eases sinus issues!

What are sinuses anyways? Sinuses are air pockets located in the cheekbones, between the eyes and the forehead. Small channels connect the sinuses to the nasal passages, allowing mucus to drain into the nose from the sinuses and air to flow into the sinuses from the nose.

Sinusitis is a condition when the paranasal sinuses become inflamed. This can cause headaches, tightness of the facial muscles, and increased production/discharge of mucus. Other symptoms include dizziness and the feeling of a “heavy head,” both of which are the results of congested (or blocked) sinus and other nasal passages. Sometimes nosebleeds are suffered.

Sinusitis is either classified as acute (less than four weeks) or chronic (eight weeks or longer). Either way, it can be annoying, embarrassing and painful to deal with.

A viral infection is often to blame, and when this occurs, the virus usually resolves itself without requiring any medication, and treatment consists of relieving the symptoms and not the virus itself. However in the case of allergies, the course of treatment depends on multiple factors, including the type of allergy, the patient’s overall health and also eliminating or avoiding certain environmental factors (such as mold, dust, extra dander, and extra pollen).

Food allergies play a subtle role in increasing the incidence of sinus symptoms. Symptoms are often aggravated by dairy products, caffeine, spicy foods, and alcohol. Limiting or eliminating these are advised.

A Map to Your Sinuses

A Map to Your Sinuses

Acupuncture is helpful in giving immediate relief of the symptoms, as well as treating underlying factors. We take a complete history to understand all the body systems. Point sites will be local for the immediate relief, and also other places determined by your history, as well as tongue and pulse diagnosis. The headache you may have will be relieved immediately! There will also be an immediate improvement on the stuffiness, and usually only a few treatments are needed to be of great help.

We will look at deeper underlying issues as well. In the case of viral infections, acupuncture helps to relieve stress and restore balance to your system so that your body can heal itself and return to full health quickly.

Be Thankful for Good Health! Acupuncture Eases Pain, Depression

Acupuncture Helps With Winter Blues - Visit our office in Wilton, Bethel or Fairfield, CT

Re-balance with Acupuncture!

We all overdo it – physically and mentally, and acupuncture is a natural way to ease pain and depression.

How does acupuncture do this? In cases of strains and sprains, it serves to reduce inflammation, and restore and improve circulation. Acupuncture helps injured muscles heal more quickly.

In the case of lower back strain, for example, acupuncture helps to relieve those stresses that are causing tension so that the hamstring muscles can recover, and also reduces the body’s reactive guarding that often contributes to further distress.

Acupuncture supports healthy hormone function which will help support your joints’ integrity, gives you more energy, and can help create pain relieving substances within the body to help it feel better! Acupuncture also promotes good sleep, and aids in digestion.

Pain can come in all forms. Acupuncture is also an effective treatment for depression. Symptoms of depression include loss of interest or focus, fatigue, changes in eating habits and excessive sleeping, among many others. Depression causes people to lose pleasure from daily life, can complicate other medical conditions, and can even be serious enough to lead to suicide. As with many illnesses, early treatment is more effective and helps prevent the likelihood of serious recurrences.

Better Sleep with Acupuncture!

Better Sleep with Acupuncture!

Acupuncture is a wonderful addition to Western treatments, and for those who wish to bypass prescription drugs, treating depression with acupuncture has a positive and holistic effect on depressed patients, and avoids the potential side effects of traditional medication.

The energy systems we work with include the Liver system and many other point sites may be used to address what we find in individual cases – based on the history and complete exam, of pulses and tongue, as well. An initial and immediate sign of improvement is often sleeping improvements and the feeling of better and more energy.

Relief from pain, depression — acupuncture is certainly an ally for all seasons!

Get Winterized — Boost Your Immunity (and more!) with Acupuncture!

Get ready for winter with Acupuncture!

Get ready for winter with acupuncture!

Winter is on its way, and there is help for those who want a boost of energy and a strong immune system. Acupuncture!

How does it work? Acupuncture acts on the body’s own subtle energy system to clear obstructions and maximize the flow of energy and blood through the healing mechanisms of the body, including the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. This enhances the body’s own innate healing capacity and lead to an overall increase in energy and vitality.

But that’s not all. Treatments often bring about a sense of wonderful relaxation. It has been proven that such deep relaxation helps regulate the autonomic nervous system, which can help reduce stress and anxiety, and expand a sense of well-being. Who wouldn’t want that?

Acupuncture also works to strengthen your immunity. Acupuncture heals imbalances in your immune system and also restores energy channels that have become disrupted. When these channels are open, the immune function functions at an optimal level and your body stays healthy. Researchers have found that acupuncture enhances the production of natural killer cells, the body’s defense mechanisms against viruses and bacteria. Acupuncture also regulates the activity of white blood cells, which also fight against infection and allergic reactions.

Diet also plays an important role in keeping your immune system strong. Simple diet modifications can greatly improve the functioning of the immune system. There are also some power foods that can help.

Power Foods to Boost Your Immunity

  • Yogurt — Probiotics, or the “live active cultures” found in yogurt, are healthy bacteria that keep the gut and intestinal tract free of disease-causing germs.

Boost your immunity with your diet (and acupuncture!)

Boost your immunity with your diet (and acupuncture!)

  • Garlic — This potent relative of the onion contains the active ingredient allicin, which fights infection and bacteria.
  • Shellfish — Get crabby! Selenium, plentiful in shellfish such as oysters, lobsters, crabs, and clams, helps white blood cells produce cytokines—proteins that help clear flu viruses out of the body. Salmon, mackerel, and herring are rich in omega-3 fats, which reduce inflammation, increasing airflow and protecting lungs from colds and respiratory infections.
  • Sweet Potatoes — Not just for holiday meals anymore. Vitamin A  plays a major role in the production of connective tissue, a key component of skin.  One of the best ways to get vitamin A into your diet is from foods containing beta-carotene (like carrots and sweet potatoes), which your body turns into vitamin A.
  • Mushrooms — Brush them off and cook them up! “Studies show that mushrooms increase the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive. This is a good thing when you have an infection,” says Douglas Schar, DipPhyt, MCPP, MNIMH, director of the Institute of Herbal Medicine in Washington, DC.

Acupuncture also aids with pain relief, easing depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and many other ailments. With acupuncture and a healthy diet, get set to enjoy the winter!

Acid or Upset Stomach? Acupuncture to the Rescue!

Acupuncture Eases Digestive Issues

Acupuncture Eases Digestive Issues

Acupuncture works wonderfully for stomach issues of all kinds!

The holidays are fast approaching, and sometimes our bodies don’t know how to deal with all of the rich and sumptuous foods we gift it with, and indigestion can occur. For some, however, digestive issues are year round.

Acid reflux, or heartburn, is a common digestive complaint affecting approximately 44 percent of the adult U.S. population at least once a month, and 20 percent feel it at least once a week. Acid reflux is also called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, and it can lead to more serious problems. Often pregnant women experience GERD, partly because the stomach has less room and contents are more easily upset.

Many people undergo dangerous surgery to heal acid reflux or take drugs that list serious side effects: irregular heartbeats, seizures, trouble breathing and a severe intestinal condition called Clostridium difficile. The great news is that you don’t need to take any of these risks when you heal your heartburn the natural way.

A 2007 study in the journal, “Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, as well as a 2006 review in the Journal of Gastroenterology suggest that acupuncture may be a viable treatment option for gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, a chronic form of the condition.

Acupuncture heals the channels of the entire digestive system, curing the underlying causes of acid reflux. Acupuncture helps ease symptoms and discomfort immediately, and also relieves indigestion, and stomach ache.

Acupuncture may also benefit patients who find their symptoms are brought on or worsened by stress, anxiety and emotional issues. Acupuncture works to relieve the body of these stressors by helping to calm the nerves thus inducing a state of relaxation.

Happy Halloween! Say “Boo” to Headaches (& Other Painful Bodily Occurrences)

Feel Fabulous Every Day of the Year with Acupuncture

Feel Fabulous Every Day of the Year with Acupuncture

Headaches, heartburn, back pain, neck pain — scary!
What do all of they have in common?
Acupuncture!

The other thing they have in common is that they can really ruin a party, vacation, or a work day. But you have an ally on your side.

Acupuncture is one of the most time-tested treatments known to mankind. It has been used for thousands of years to help sooth and heal these and many other complaints that make you go bump in the night, or grumble during the day.

First off, acupuncture is very effective at relieving headaches and migraines. Acupuncture always looks to the underlying causes as well, and thereby can help to prevent any future occurrences. Acupuncture offers powerful relief without the side effects that prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause.

This is also good news for those of us who suffer from acid reflux, indigestion and stomach aches. Acupuncture heals the channels of the entire digestive system, curing the underlying causes of acid reflux. Acupuncture helps ease symptoms and discomfort immediately, relieving the acid reflux, indigestion, and stomach ache.

Acupuncture may also benefit acid reflux patients who find their symptoms are brought on or worsened by stress, anxiety and emotional issues. Acupuncture works to relieve the body of these stressors by helping to calm the nerves thus inducing a state of relaxation. Yay less stress! Yay relaxation!

Let Acupuncture Relieve Your Back Pain

Let Acupuncture Relieve Your Pain

Acupuncture is also a friend to your back and your neck, when you’ve sprained or strained yourself. Back pain is one of the most frequently treated symptoms, and most people experience great results.

This is also true for neck pain. Acupuncture will help speed the healing process. In addition, acupuncture is good at reducing the tension in the neck tendons and muscles. It can help relieve the pain and tightness in the neck by increasing the circulation of blood and energy.

Don’t be spooked! Acupuncture has a relaxing effect on many people and some even fall asleep during the treatment. Pain relief and relaxation – what a treat!

Happy Halloween!

Acupuncture Found Effective for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Patients

Acupuncture Helps with Alzheimer's and Dementia

Acupuncture Helps with Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia diagnosed in the aging population worldwide.

Dementia is a cognitive impairment that can occur with certain diseases. It affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. Most types of Dementia are degenerative, meaning they are nonreversible.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and someone develops it every 67 seconds. It is the sixth leading cause of death.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. The cause of Alzheimer’s is still not clear, and there is no cure. As the average life expectancy has increased over the past few decades, so have the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Unless a cure or other preventive measure is found, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that by the year 2025, 22 million individuals worldwide will develop Alzheimer’s disease.

But there is help and hope for those who suffer from it. Researchers around the world are working on a number of treatment strategies that might change the course of the disease. And acupuncture is one of them.

Acupuncture has shown promising results to treat the depression and anxiety associated with Dementia, as well as to increase patient’s verbal and motor skills and to increase cognitive function. Two well-known studies on the matter came out of Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, and at the University of Hong Kong.

In the Wellesley study, Dr. Nancy Emerson Lombardo and a team of colleagues at Wellesley College in Massachuestts studied 11 patients, 10 with Alzheimer’s and one with vascular dementia. Subjects were treated with acupuncture twice a week for three months, with each subject receiving a minimum of 22 treatments. Patients were subjected to a variety of tests before and after being treated. The results stated “statistically significant improvements” in the depression and anxiety scores of patients.

Improve the Quality of Life with Acupuncture

Improve the Quality of Life with Acupuncture

In Dr. Kao’s study, eight patients diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease were treated at the University of Hong Kong. After being treated, Kao’s team reported that patients “significantly improved” on measures of verbal orientation and motor coordination and had higher overall Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE) scores. They also noted that patients “showed a significant overall clinical improvement” on the TCM checklist, leading the researchers to conclude that acupuncture treatment “has shown significant therapeutic effects” in reducing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Knowledge is power. Check over this list from the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ten Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
2. Challenging in planning and solving problems
3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure
4. Confusion with time or place
5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
8. Decreased or poor judgment
9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
10. Changes in mood and personality

If you notice any of the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s in yourself or someone you know, don’t ignore them. Schedule an appointment with your doctor. If the disease is detected early, medical intervention can extend the period during which patients and their families can enjoy a relatively high quality of life. Acupuncture can help!

Pain from an Ear Ache? Acupuncture Hears the Call for Help

Hear Ye! Acupuncture Brings Relief from Ear Infections

Hear Ye! Acupuncture Brings Relief from Ear Infections

Are you or a loved one suffering from an ear infection?

Acute otitis media (AOM) is the number-one reason for visits to a family doctor or pediatrician in this country. There’s a reason for this — within the ear, warmth and darkness are the perfect environments for fungus and viruses to flourish. It is estimated that more than 10 million children are treated for ear infections each year in the United States, and that means lots of anxious parents up late at night.

Typical symptoms of primary otalgia (earache) can include fever, dizziness, a feeling of pressure along with pain and tightness on the affected side of the head, bulging eardrums, blocked sinuses, headache, irritability, insomnia and restlessness, as well as changes in appetite. No fun at all!

The most common cause of earaches is an infection, either viral or bacterial inside the ear canal, but also may be caused by foreign objects such as hair, insects, or ear wax lodged inside the ear, as well as food allergies, often to dairy or wheat.

Ear infections usually start a buildup of fluids in the inner or outer ear canal, commonly in the Eustachian tube that prevents drainage of fluids. When healthy, the Eustachian tube’s job is to adjust the pressure in the middle ear and drain fluid from it. Middle ear infections are more common in children because the Eustachian tube is much shorter in kids than in adults and more likely to get clogged.

The Inner Workings of the Ear

The Inner Workings of the Ear

Ear infections can cause mild or severe pain, or there may be no pain at all.  In babies, symptoms can often only include fussiness and waking at night, runny nose, or a fever. If a fever is present and persistently high, do contact your health provider, and if the baby is under four months old, if any fever is present at all. Commonly suffered in tandem or shortly after a cold, an untreated ear infection can put pressure on the eardrum, which can lead to hearing loss, a ruptured eardrum and other problems.

Acupuncture is very helpful and can relieve the pain of an ear infection immediately. Acupuncture is extremely effective in speeding up the recovery time from ear infections and preventing them from coming back by treating both the root cause and the symptoms.  The point sites are near the ear area, with a few others included. And best of all — the treatment does not hurt!

Listen to the Sweet Sound of Pain Relief with Acupuncture!

Listen to the Sweet Sound of Pain Relief with Acupuncture!

If you would like to avoid antibiotics, or if they haven’t helped, as half of all ear infections are causes by viruses, and antibiotics can only kill bacteria, acupuncture is a safe, effective way to relieve the stress and pain from earaches.

And that’s music to the ears!

Life Being a Pain in the Foot? Acupuncture Brings Relief!

Happy, Healthy Feet with Acupuncture

Happy, Healthy Feet with Acupuncture

Love your feet? Want the pain gone? Acupuncture!

The foot is one of the most complex parts of the body. This small amount of square footage consists of 38 bones connected by numerous joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and is vulnerable to many stresses.

Foot pain can be caused by a variety of conditions, most often improper foot function or poor posture. Poor choices of footwear can worsen and, in some cases, produce foot problems. Shoes that are too tight, for instance, can increase pressure and stress, while shoes that are too loose can let the foot slide and rub, creating friction. Overuse and exercise-related problems can also cause foot pain, as do bunions and hammertoes.

Studies have shown acupuncture to be effective in relieving foot pain. A study published in the journal Acupuncture in Medicine found acupuncture to be effective in relieving otherwise unresponsive chronic foot pain.

Acupuncture also treats plantar fasciitis, one of the most common cause of heel pain.

The journal Medical Acupuncture conducted a study using electroacupuncture on plantar fascitis. According to this study, 82 percent of patients claimed a 50 percent or more improvement in pain reduction.

Happy Feet with Acupuncture!

Jump for joy! Acupuncture works!

How exactly does this work? Acupuncture treatments help to release endorphins and enkephalins, substances needed for pain management within the body. It also stimulates certain neurotransmitters, which are also important in pain perception, as well as ACTH. ACTH is a hormone that triggers the release of cortisol from the adrenal glands. Cortisol is important in the body’s inflammatory response, and it is also involved in the release of norepinephrine and epinephrine, a potent hormone that can help decrease pain perception.

Acupuncture also improves circulation and speeds the healing process for strains and sprains.

In plain terms, acupuncture works to relieve pain by working with your body’s natural resources, speeding the healing process and helping the body produce its own pain relieving chemicals.
