  • Even when you’re warmed up, it’s still possible to injure your back. Repetitive motions and lifting heavy objects improperly are definitely risky garden business for backs. Don’t bend and twist when lifting something heavy!
  • Try switching tasks every 15 minutes, and use knee pads when pulling weeds and planting. Lift with your legs and keep your back straight.

If you’ve overdone it in the sun – – Acupuncture brings sunburn relief!

The weather is gorgeous, everyone is out and about in their gardens, playing or hiking outside, or floating on the water. It’s also very easy to forget how quickly an afternoon in the sun can turn someone into a walking lobster.

Acupuncture to the rescue! It’s not necessarily the first thing you think about when you think about sunburn, but acupuncture will not only help soothe the pain, it will make you feel more relaxed in the process.

  • Seems simple…avoid the sun when it’s at super strength. Don’t stay out for long periods of time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you’re outdoors during this time, keep in mind that you’ll burn faster than at other times of the day.
  • Beware of reflective surfaces. Water or sand can bounce as much as 17% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays back at you.
  • Going to be out in the sun for a while? Use clothing such as cover-ups, long, loose-fitting pants and tops, and wide-brimmed hats to protect you. Choose lightweight fabrics that are cool, but will still give you sun protection. Remember your sunglasses! Eyes can burn, too.
  • Wear sunblock. Sunblock will protect your skin from the sun’s rays, but be aware that many contain questionable chemicals that are not typically regulated. Choose natural varieties from your health food store, and be sure to reapply the sunblock if you have been in the water or have been sweating.
  • Be a shady lady or gentleman! A simple way to avoid sunburn is to go in a shaded area to get out of the sun. If a shaded area is not available, use an umbrella. It will also make it easier for your friends and family to locate you on the beach! Win/win!

Acupuncture treatments are effective because they treat more than the symptoms.  In acupuncture, we consider physical, emotional, and environmental factors of the individual when treating skin problems.

Acne is among the most common of skin conditions. If you suffer from acne, you’re not alone. It affects almost all adolescents to some degree, and can extend into adulthood. The degree of severity can vary widely, and sometimes scarring can occur. It can also be the source of physical pain and local skin infections.

Acupuncture methods such as auricular and hormone balancing acupuncture are the most commonly used acupuncture methods for treating acne. When acupuncture is used for acne, it targets specific areas of the body that are known to trigger digestion and the immune system and to reduce inflammation. It also works on regulating your body’s internal structures, organs and functions, as well as balancing hormone levels.

When acupuncture regulates your body’s hormone output, it also regulates your skin’s oils and make your skin clearer. Hormone balancing acupuncture has more benefits for women who have hormone imbalances and menstrual problems like mood swings, PMS, cramping, etc. which will also be helped greatly with this procedure. Acupuncture is also effective in stimulating the body’s immune responses which can help deal with the bacteria that cause the acne. 

Another common skin complaint is Rosacea.  Rosacea is a cyclic inflammatory skin condition. Symptoms are redness on the face, red bumps (pustules) on the nose, cheeks, chin and forehead, thickening of the skin, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), burning sensation in the eyes, and flushing/blushing.  Rosacea will flare up for a few weeks or months, then appear to get better before flaring up again. 

The actual cause of rosacea is unclear. It also tends to be a progressive problem, meaning that it gets worse over time.  When rosacea is severe, patients often also develop redness, dryness, grittiness, and inflammation of the eyes that can eventually lead to partial vision loss.

Yes, beauty is more than skin deep. However, for those who suffer from skin issues, it can certainly feel like beauty is only for those with good lighting.

How is acupuncture good for acne?

There’s been years of research behind this as well. In 2009, Tianjin University of TCM in China looked at 1,613 case studies about acne and acupuncture conducted over a period of 40 years. After evaluating the studies in combination with western medicine studies, the researchers found that found acupoint stimulation treatments were as effective, and possibly more effective, than many Western acne treatment methods. Acupuncture treatments do not have painful side effects, like bleached skin, itchy skin, or flaking skin, which can occur with many traditional treatments.

Restoring the body’s balance is key, and paying attention to your diet will also aid in clearing acne. Increasing Omega-3 levels, and vitamin A and D, (they’re antiproliferative, which means they stop the growth of malignant cells) will help.
