It’s amazing, really, how easy it is to sprain your ankle. And it’s usually nothing that death-defying or glamorous. Getting up too fast and twisting weird while getting a snack. Tripping over your own foot and falling down the stairs. Stepping into a gopher hole when you were just trying to catch a frisbee. And no, “I’m” not “all right”, Mr. Gopher. Not so much at all…
A sprain is the most common type of ankle injury, something that occurs when the foot twists beyond the range of normal motion and the ligament is stretched or suffers a tear. (Stepping in a hole, for example.) Most ankle sprains happen when you make a rapid shifting movement with your foot planted. Often the ankle rolls outward and the foot turns inward. This causes the ligaments on the outside of the ankle to stretch and tear. The most serious sprains involve a partial or fully torn ligament. Symptoms of a sprained ankle include immediate pain, swelling, bruising, and if the injury is severe, the inability to put any weight on it. The recommended treatment for an ankle sprain is R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
A sprained ankle can move an athlete or performer to the sidelines and offstage — it was just reported that Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp is expected to miss the three-game series against the Blue Jays after spraining his left ankle. Many an understudy takes the stage when the principal dancers of a ballet suffer a sprain. However, acupuncture is one of the most successful treatments for this particular ailment, it is extraordinary. Serena Williams received several acupuncture treatments early in 2012 when she was in Brisbane competing in the Women’s International Tennis Tournament, who also, incidentally, had a very good year in 2012!
