Headache-y? Crampy? Cranky? Anxious?
No, these aren’t the first four of the Dysfunctional Seven Dwarves, but things we ladies go through and deal with. We no longer need to do it alone! Acupuncture is a great way to deal with headaches, cramps, PMS symptoms, and the stresses of daily life.
First off — headaches. Whether it’s from the fact that you have a child under the age of, let’s say 30, bills that were due yesterday, or a serious caffeine withdrawal, headaches can stop you in your tracks and leave you rubbing your temples while squinting at people or just going away to hide. They are one of the most common physical complaints that prompt people to treat themselves or seek professional assistance.
A “headache” is a blanket term for over 200 conditions that fall into multiple classifications, and therefore the symptoms (and treatment) depends on the type of headache. The severity of a headache ranges from a tightness in the neck area to an incapacitating migraine that can last several days. Also common to the headache group are those caused by stuffy sinuses.
Acupuncture has been used to relieve headaches and migraines (as well as their underlying causes) for thousands of years without the side effects that prescription and over-the-counter drugs can cause. Acupuncture always looks to the underlying causes as well, and thereby can help to prevent any future occurrences.Typical treatments last from five to 30 minutes, with the patient being treated one or two times a week. Some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, while more severe or chronic ailments often require multiple treatments. Either way, relief can be found!
Next on the list are cramps — the menstrual kind.
Many women experience pain each month with their periods, and while it generally lessens as a woman ages or after childbirth, period cramps are often difficult to deal with. Acupuncture can help! Acupuncture is appropriate prior as well as during the symptom time. It is best to work preventatively, to clear up the causes before the symptoms begin. It is certainly good to avoid medications when possible. Acupuncture is also extremely effective at treating menstrual disorders, including painful periods, irregular periods, amenorrhea and PMS.
Speaking of PMS…
Scientists are unclear of the exact cause of PMS, although they have found correlations. Some studies show that glutamate levels in the brain spike prior to menstruation, which can cause mood swings and anxiety. Other scientists suspect that low levels of serotonin or beta-endorphin (both neurotransmitters that promote positive moods) may underlie the symptoms of PMS.
Regardless of the exact cause, premenstrual syndrome is easy to cure!
Hormone levels naturally fluctuate during the menstrual cycle. However, stress, discomfort and anxiety that arise from these changing levels are not! Minor lifestyle adjustments can help reduce symptoms. Also, with acupuncture’s balancing effects, it restores harmony to the hormonal and energy systems of the body, healing the causes of PMS.
As always, the point sites chosen will vary a little based on the individual, as we assess the history and the whole health picture. We will also look at the tongue and pulse diagnosis, and consider your diet as well. Point sites chosen will include lower back as well as lower abdomen. There will be others as well, perhaps on the top of the foot and maybe inside of ankles. The point sites are painless, and gently treated.
The end result? You feel better, your mood improves, your stress level decreases (acupuncture is wonderful for reducing stress), your headache and/or nausea goes away and your energy returns. And those you live and work with aren’t afraid of you anymore. Win/win!
So ladies, if you’re in pain or discomfort, acupuncture is a new best friend! Feel free to tell your guy friends about it, too.
