The rotator cuff is the name given to the group of four muscles and tendons that comprise part of the mechanism of the shoulder. The rotator cuff has achieved notoriety in athletes, particularly baseball players. In addition, the rotator muscles help you rotate the arm back, think reaching back to your back pocket.
Similar to other muscle problems, the goal is to reduce pain and swelling in order to alleviate the symptoms and discomfort. Lifestyle modifications (namely assuming correct posture and sleeping positions, as well as correct stretching) are recommended, along with R.I.C.E. (Rest, icing, compression, elevation).
Acupuncture is helpful in speeding up the healing of the strains that can cause the pain. The nerves that travel there can get chaffed, and communicate the pain. Immediate improvement on the extra tension that often builds up at the upper back and neck to shoulder area, will give the opportunity for the nerve sheathing to heal, and release the extra tension in the tendons. Classic exit points are located there- how convenient!
When surgery is unavoidable due to actual tears, acupuncture is valuable pre-op and post-op to aid in optimal healing and recovery. It is great when acupuncture eliminates the call for possible surgery. There is your reason to call. Plus, we’re very friendly!
