The ankle is the joint where the bottom of the leg meets the foot. It is bound by several ligaments and is one of the weight-bearing joints in the body. Because it is subjected to extreme stress on a regular basis, ankle pain and injuries plague many of us, both athletes and non-athletes alike.
Sprains are the most common type of ankle injury and occur when the foot twists beyond the range of normal motion and the ligament is stretched or suffers a tear. (Stepping in a hole, for example.) The most serious sprains involve a partial or fully torn ligament. Symptoms of a sprained ankle include immediate pain, swelling, bruising, and if the injury is severe, the inability to put any weight on it. The recommended treatment for an ankle sprain is R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
Acupuncture is important to add to the treatment plan. The healing is faster, and all residual blockages of “energy patterns” are cleared away. For all patients seeking acupuncture, a history of body injuries is asked about, and old ankle injuries are listed and considered in that future treatment, in addition to other injuries larger or smaller. The body can “remember” traumas.
Point sites chosen will certainly be local, and near to the injury. Do not be surprised if point sites farther away are also included. Acupuncture is painless, gentle, and effective. Often, the anxiety and stress are immediately relieved. Patients feel much more relaxed and at ease during and after a treatment.
