A uterine fibroid is a benign (non-cancerous tumor) that forms on the smooth muscle layer (or connecting tissue) of the uterus, and generally affects females in their latter reproductive years. Symptoms can include pain during menstruation as well as intercourse, and can also cause frequent (and often urgent) urination.
Heavier menstrual bleeding, prolonged and more painful periods are typical signs.
Untreated, fibroids can cause heavy bleeding, which often leads to anemia and/or iron deficiency. Treatment can range from medication that decreases estrogen levels to surgery, depending on the severity along with a number of other factors.
Acupuncture is helpful with the symptoms associated with fibroids, and can lessen their development. Enzyme supplements are recommended, as well. Many cases that I have treated have improved very nicely. Pre-op, as well as post-surgery treatments are important to include when relevant. Acupuncture is painless, and gentle in this condition. Point sites chosen will be local ones for the abdomen, and others determined on an individual basis. A longer series of treatments will be necessary.
