Gastritis is a digestive disorder and occurs when the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed. Symptoms include abdominal pain, indigestion, bloating, nausea and vomiting. Like many other disorders, gastritis can be labeled either acute or chronic.
There is a wide range of causes for gastritis, including long-term ingestion of alcohol, OTC medicines (namely aspirin or ibuprofen) or bacterial infection. Testing for gastritis can be done in many ways, including a blood test, taking a stool sample, X-ray and endoscopy, among others. Doctors often think of antibiotics, which can be relevant.
Acupuncture is always appropriate for digestive problems. We treat the meridians of the abdominal area and include leg points. Sometimes back points are also included. Improvement is often after a few treatments, which is encouraging. Diet improvements are discussed. Always a complete history and examination of tongue and pulses helps to determine the right choice of points. Eat slowly and enjoy your food and company. Think of the sunlight that helps food grow—that light becomes your food and your stomach receives it. It is all part of a greater Yang, a wonderful activity that nourishes.
