GERD is an acronym for Gastroesophageal reflux disease (often shortened to “acid reflux”) and is a chronic digestive disorder. Symptoms of GERD include heartburn, difficulty swallowing and the “repeating” of food being digested. In addition, it has been linked to difficulty sleeping, ulcers and even dental issues.
It is commonly caused by changes (either temporary or permanent) in the esophagus, and has the potential to lead other serious issues, particularly in children. Left untreated, GERD can cause permanent injury not only to the esophagus, but the digestive system, as well.
Acupuncture helps with just a few treatments. So relief is a wonderful thing. It is important to improve diet habits, eating time habits, and emotions and thought patterns that affect the stomach. We look at the whole history, and the tongue and pulse information as well, to help determine how to treat. The acupuncture point sites are right there on the abdomen; the meridians involved are the Stomach, and the Liver meridian. We use point sites on the Ren Mo (front and center), and Spleen meridian, as well. I usually choose some back points, and leg points. The treatments are painless and gentle.
