Beat the Heat of Hot Flashes and the Insomnia of Menopause with Acupuncture!

Let Acupuncture Be an Ally During Menopause

Let Acupuncture Be an Ally During Menopause

Would you like relief from hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia due to menopause?

Today approximately 40 million American women suffer with the unpleasant and sometimes debilitating symptoms of menopause — about 80% of them having hot flashes and night sweats.

Hot flashes are a series of symptoms that affect women, mostly those approaching or in menopause. Hot flashes may be the single most aggravating symptom during menopause — they are the subjective sensation of intense warmth in the upper body, neck and face. They are caused by hormone changes within the body and when they occur at night, are referred to as “night sweats.”

It is not uncommon for women affected by them to experience insomnia, restlessness, irritability, and depression. They may occur in 80% of menopausal women, and may last for up to five years.

It’s no wonder that women are taking charge of their health and looking for relief!

Women are also looking towards holistic therapies to treat their symptoms.  And studies have shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment.

From 1997 to 1999, one of the first studies in the United States to explore the effectiveness of acupuncture in alleviating hot flashes, insomnia and nervousness, conducted by Dr. Susan Cohen, D.S.N., APRN, associate professor of the University of Pittsburgh, it was found that during the course of acupuncture treatments, hot flashes decreased by 35% and insomnia decreased by 50%. A follow-up study revealed hot flashes significantly decreased in those receiving acupuncture, compared to those receiving routine care.

Acupuncture almost always clears the hot flashes easily and quickly, with only a few treatments. What a wonderful relief! The point sites chosen do not hurt, are gentle, and effective. Patients feel a sense of increased well-being and a higher energy level.

Other symptoms such as insomnia can be treated at the same time. In fact, acupuncture is helpful and relevant for treating all sleep problems. Acupuncture works by approaching the mind and body holistically to address internal imbalance, encouraging the flow of natural energy, and releasing physical and mental tension.

Acupuncture can curb hot flashes and night sweats, balance the endocrine system, improve sleep quality and energy levels, improve irritability and the feeling of fogginess, increase your immune function, promote mind-body relaxation, and strengthen metabolism.

All of this combines to promote better health and an enhanced quality of life, and with no side effects. What an ally to menopause!

Acupuncture Can Help You Keep it Together This Holiday! Relieve Anxiety and Irritability!

Relieve Anxiety and Irritability with Acupuncture!

The holiday season can bring out all the best and worst in us. We all have bad days; perhaps the hormones are raging, that guy at the store just took the last have-to-have item off of your Santa list. and when we add being overworked, lack of sleep, and feeling as though so much more needs to be accomplished than we have time for, it’s natural to feel a bit snappy or overwhelmed. But when feeling irritated and moody feels more like a permanent state, (and you’re perhaps in danger of being added to the Naughty List) acupuncture can help!

Often irritability and moodiness can be the consequence of built up stress in your life. Those little things can really add up! Over time these emotions can develop into more serious emotional conditions such as anxiety and depression, as well as other health concerns such as digestive problems, trouble sleeping and the tendency for a weakened immune system. And that’s a bad recipe that’s just waiting for a packet of illness to be added to the mix.

There can be many different reasons for the disharmony within the body that result in emotional disorders, but anger, irritability, and frustration are all signs that our qi (energy) is not moving smoothly. The liver is responsible for the smooth flowing of qi throughout the body and for calming our emotions. When the liver’s function of moving qi is disrupted, qi can become stuck or stagnant. This is referred to as liver qi stagnation. Liver qi stagnation is one of the most common patterns of disharmony that we see in patients.

In addition to irritability and moodiness, other signs and super fun symptoms of liver qi stagnation may include distending pain in the area below the ribs, stuffiness of the chest, sighing, abdominal distention, nausea, sour regurgitation, belching, diarrhea or constipation, feeling of a lump in the throat, irregular periods, painful periods and distention of the breasts prior to periods. Liver qi stagnation is commonly associated with PMS. That’s the bad news.

Here’s the good news! Acupuncture is excellent at relieving liver qi stagnation. The treatment for irritability and moodiness associated with the stagnation focuses on moving qi, and supporting the liver and spleen organ systems with acupuncture, lifestyle and dietary recommendations. Acupuncture can help smooth your emotions and bring your hormones into balance. It can also help improve the overall health of your liver as well as treat stress, anger and frustration — which will make everyone happier…and you much more healthy!

And you can remain proudly at the top of the Nice List.

PMS Symptoms Relieved with Acupuncture

PMS Symptoms Relieved by Acupuncture

Premenstrual syndrome (commonly abbreviated as PMS) is a blanket term for a number of physical and emotional symptoms that relate to a woman’s menstrual cycle. Although these symptoms are totally normal and have no bearing on physical or mental well being outside the short time they occur, they nonetheless range in severity from barely noticeable to extremely uncomfortable.

PMS typically manifests itself in both physical (cramps, bloating, headaches) and emotional (anxiety, irritability, insomnia, moodiness) symptoms. There are over 200 different symptoms associated with PMS, but in most cases women are affected with only a few. For some women, symptoms last only a few hours, often a few days, but a few women have severe discomfort up to 3 weeks each month.

I have had many patients referred to me from doctors, who say, “Try acupuncture, we have heard good things about it”. It does usually clear up the problem nicely, and it is certainly good to avoid medications when possible.

Acupuncture is appropriate prior as well as during the symptom time. I prefer to work preventatively, to clear up the causes before the symptoms attack. Attack is a harsh word; some symptoms do feel that way though. The point sites chosen will vary a little based on the individual, as we assess the history and the whole health picture. We will also look at the tongue and pulse diagnosis, and perhaps consider your diet as well. Point sites chosen will include lower back as well as lower abdomen. There will be others as well, perhaps on the top of the foot! (liver 3) and maybe inside of ankles… The point sites are painless, and gently treated.

Your very next month will be so much better!

A testimonial from one of our patients…

“Hi there, don’t know what you did but my cramps went from bad to nothing ……I feel much better! Thank you! I am so impressed with your work! Thank you again!”

Improve Your Mood with Acupuncture

If you feel irritable and moody on a regular basis, then your emotions may be in disharmony! Occasionally irritability arises during times of hormonal fluctuation, which happens frequently when women experience PMS (premenstrual syndrome). Other times, you may feel irritable or frustrated if you live in a state of chronic stress. In either situation, acupuncture can help relieve stresses, smooth your emotions and bring your hormones balance.

If you find that sleeplessness, bouts of anger or poor digestion accompany your feelings of irritability then you may be on the way to more serious issues, such as anxiety or depression. It’s better to interrupt the cascade of negativity quickly and let acupuncture help you get back on a track of health, wellness and good feelings.
