Addiction is rampant in our society. Acupuncture is very helpful in treating all forms of addictions—from serious ones involving alcohol and hard drugs to relatively less serious ones involving nicotine and overeating.

How does it do that? Research has shown that acupuncture can raise the level of endorphins in the nervous system.  Endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers, resembling opiates in structure and function. Cravings and withdrawal symptoms experienced by people giving up smoking or drugs can be alleviated by raising the level of endorphins in the nervous system. Some researchers also believe that the desire to eat is also mediated by the endorphin level in the brain, which would explain why acupuncture helps dieters to control their appetites.

Food, smoking, and medication addictions are the ones that are most common and acupuncture certainly gives great results. With smoking, often only one treatment is needed! With medication addiction, a series of treatments over a short period of time is appropriate. With food, and appetite control, acupuncture is helpful quickly. The point sites vary a little from person to person, but ear points can always be included in the choice. A complete history and exam is always important to guide in the choice of point sites.

Acupuncture alleviates withdrawal symptoms (including cravings, body aches, headache, nausea, sweating, muscle cramping, etc.) so mental and physical stability are quickly achieved, reduces the physical symptoms of withdrawal, relieves depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects over ten million of us in the United States each year. For many, the symptoms start in the fall and carry on through the winter, although some people do suffer seasonal depression in the spring or early summer. While the true cause of SAD is not known, it is commonly thought that decreased melatonin levels caused from the limited exposure to sunlight in the winter are involved, as well as decreased serotonin levels which may trigger depression.

We’re all aiming for a happy holiday, and with acupuncture, stress can be a thing of yesteryear!

While it’s good to sit back, relax and enjoy the beauty of the season, sometimes it seems too difficult — work stress, family stress, stress of any kind can build up, and often physical manifestations can take place.

Life brings challenges. And that can certainly be an understatement. Everyone gets stressed out, and everyone feels tension and overwhelmed by emotions sometimes.  However, the bad news is that tension in the body can cause energy to be blocked, and that stuck energy affects various organs and meridians within the body.  

Traditional Chinese medicine regards emotions as a significant contributor to a person’s health. The body has a history that it subconsciously remembers and that can affect its ability to be optimally functioning and healthy.

In some people, the build up and stagnation of energy can cause muscle tension, pain, and spasms through the shoulders, neck and temples, and cause headaches. If tension isn’t released in a healthy way, it will find an outlet, and it’s often expressed in angry outbursts — while it helps in the short run to relieve the pressure, it sure can cause damage inside and out. And strain relationships. If this stagnation remains unresolved, it can become chronic, and can lead to habitual anger, migraines and high blood pressure among other possible symptoms.  

Grief is also a very powerful emotion. The organ considered most connected to grief is the small intestines. The small intestines meridian houses the points related to repression, resistance, and the deep holding of emotions. If blocked, chi (life force) becomes stagnant and can manifest in an array of symptoms such as fatigue, hair loss, insomnia, and depression.  

Another place energy can get blocked is in the chest area — this can cause physical symptoms such as shallow or difficult breathing or heart palpitations. The heart is the emotional center, and tension often brings with it feelings of nervousness, anxiety or even feeling emotionally cut-off, which can lead to long- term depression. 

For emotional tension, if there is a deficiency of energy in the heart, acupuncture can help to bring energy to the area and to balance it.  A heart that has been closed off emotionally can start to gently relax and open. The heart must be free of blockages and illness to fully express joy, its natural emotion, to its fullest capacity.

Acupuncture is a highly effective, time-tested treatment for sports injuries because it resolves pain, accelerates healing and increases range of motion. Acupuncture achieves this by decreasing inflammation, swelling and bruising; relaxing muscles and relieving spasms; lowering the body’s pain response and improving circulation. Athletes of all kinds can benefit from acupuncture if they’ve been injured, and acupuncture can help prevent injuries as well. Acupuncture for athletes is actually most beneficial while they’re training, before an injury surfaces.

Acupuncture can naturally boosts athletes’ energy levels, aid in post-workout recovery, and improve overall performance levels. Injuries do happen, though, and if we’re looking at serious injuries, acupuncture is also a wonderful complimentary therapy to traditional medicine in the treatment of stress fractures. Fun Fact: The Healthcare Medicine Institute analyzed 14 clinical trials involving 3,835 patients and concluded on its website that “Acupuncture provided significantly better relief from knee osteoarthritis pain and a larger improvement in function than sham acupuncture [or] standard care treatment.” Not-So Fun Fact: ACL tear is one of the most debilitating knee injuries, in which case a knee-stabilizing ligament tears, but here’s the good news — acupuncture helps to stabilize the knee muscles during the healing process and decrease pain and swelling.

Sports injuries often take a long time to heal, especially where ligaments or tendons are concerned. Sometimes, because of repeated use of the arm, connective tissues don’t ever have a chance to heal properly. In these cases, an athlete may come to the conclusion that an injury is permanent — not the case! All connective tissue can heal properly when given the chance and supported in the healing process. Acupuncture can speed up the healing process by returning the natural energy flow to the affected area of the body so that your arm can heal, even while you’re using it!

Headaches Relieved with Acupuncture

Headaches. They can turn reading a book, playing a game, working on a computer or bending to hug your kid into a painful experience.

They are also one of the most common physical complaints that prompt people to treat themselves or seek professional assistance.  Tension headaches are the most common headaches, and generally cause infrequent mild to moderate pain, and can be caused by stress, lack of sleep, bad posture or substance withdrawal, including nicotine and caffeine. As the name suggests, they are caused by increased muscle tension in the head and neck region.

Treatment for both tension and migraine headaches typically consists of over-the-counter or prescription medications, respectively. These medications can come with some side effects that some people wish to avoid. Acupuncture has been used to relieve headaches and migraines for thousands of years, and without side effects! Acupuncture can provide patients who suffer from tension and migraine headache an alternative treatment for their pain.

There has also been evidence published that points to the same — a new systematic review that determines that acupuncture is indeed an effective treatment option.

The review appears in The Cochrane Library, a publication of The Cochrane Collaboration, an international organization that evaluates research in all aspects of health care. Systematic reviews draw evidence-based conclusions about medical practice after considering both the content and quality of existing trials on a topic.

The Cochrane review by Linde and his colleagues focused on acupuncture for tension headaches. The researchers evaluated 11 studies that investigated 2,317 participants. The studies compared participants who had undergone acupuncture therapy with those who had no treatment except painkillers for acute headaches, or had a sham therapy, which mimicked true acupuncture. Researchers followed the patients for at least eight weeks.

Two large studies that investigated whether adding acupuncture to treatment with painkillers found that those patients who received acupuncture had fewer headaches. Forty-seven percent of patients who received acupuncture reported a decrease in the number of headache days by at least half, compared with 16 percent of patients in the control groups.

Six studies compared true acupuncture to “fake” acupuncture in which needles were either inserted at incorrect points or did not penetrate the skin. Overall, these studies found slightly better effects in the patients receiving the true acupuncture intervention.

“The response to acupuncture in general seems to be large and clinically relevant,” Linde said.

In addition to treating the symptoms of headaches, acupuncture always looks to the underlying causes as well, and thereby can help to prevent any future occurrences. Acupuncture points to treat headaches are located all over the body. During the acupuncture treatment, tiny needles will be placed along your legs, arms, shoulders, and perhaps even your big toe! The length, number and frequency of treatments will vary. Typical treatments last from five to 30 minutes, with the patient being treated one or two times a week. Some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment, while more severe or chronic ailments often require multiple treatments. Either way, relief can be found, and without side effects!
