Acupuncture Aids in the Treatment of Leukemia and Neuropathy Symptoms

Acupuncture Aids in the Treatment of Leukemia!

Leukemia may afflict anyone; it strikes people of all ages and both sexes, and unfortunately, for most cases the cause is still unknown. Leukemia is a form of cancer involving bone marrow and blood, defined as an uncontrolled growth of blood cells. There are four types of leukemia: acute myelogenous, chronic myelogenous, acute lymphocytic, and chronic lymphocytic.

Acute leukemia progresses rapidly and results in the accumulation of immature, non-functioning cells in the bone marrow and blood. The bone marrow does not produce enough normal red and white blood cells and platelets. Anemia, a deficiency of red blood cells, develops in all leukemia patients. A lack of normal white blood cells suppresses the body’s immune system, and a shortage of platelets causes bruising and bleeding. Chronic leukemia progresses at a slower rate since it allows the production of a larger number of mature functioning cells.

Many people with leukemia try additional treatments outside their standard care, hoping to manage symptoms and, in some cases, to improve their treatment outcome. Acupuncture is very beneficial for symptom management!

For some leukemia patients, cancer chemotherapy drugs can damage the peripheral nervous system (a condition known as peripheral neuropathy), causing pain, numbness, tingling, swelling, and muscle weakness in various parts of the body, especially in the hands and feet. In some cases, doctors have to reduce the chemotherapy dose in order to prevent the neuropathy from progressing further.

Acupuncture has been found to decrease these difficult neuropathy symptoms, allowing the maximum amount of chemotherapy to be used, thereby increasing the patient’s chance for a successful outcome.

Acupuncture is also known to reduce the effects of nausea caused by a variety of chemotherapy agents used to treat leukemia. Research has shown that timing the acupuncture sessions one to two days before chemotherapy infusion and continued weekly throughout the chemotherapy regimen produces the best results.

Acupuncture will help make the body stronger and better able to resist the negative effects of chemotherapy, thus diminishing the symptoms. After chemotherapy treatments, acupuncture helps in a number of ways to restore the body’s balance. Even under chronic conditions, acupuncture at specific points will set into action the body’s own healing abilities, reinvigorating the affected cells and helping them to recover, thus diminishing the symptoms. Acupuncture always works with the body’s natural energy. Clearing the energy meridians will allow the body to release endorphins, which reduce fatigue and nausea and increase energy and feelings of well-being. A great step towards being well!

Balanced Through Acupuncture – Relief from MS, Parkinson’s and Other Health Challenges

Improved Balance With Acupuncture

A loss of balance can occur because of nerve or brain injury, damage to the inner ear or obstruction to the inner ear. Gait imbalance also demonstrates a loss of balance and can indicate a more serious problem. When nerves suffer injury, muscles don’t react normally to position changes, making balance more challenging.

Three common causes of nerve damage are neuropathy, which often accompanies diabetes, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Peripheral neuropathy often results from diabetes and affects the nerves of the hands, arms, legs and feet. Neuropathy often entails a tingling sensation in these areas and indicates a loss of nerve activity. The Mayo Clinic reports that acupuncture helps reduce symptoms in persons experiencing neuropathy, as it restores circulation and nerve function. You may need multiple sessions to notice significant improvement, but these sessions are certainly worth your time.

As acupuncture helps to balance blood-sugar stabilizing hormones, you will also notice improvement in your overall health. If you have received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, acupuncture can enhance your life, as it can slow down and even undo the degenerative effects of MS. Along with lifestyle changes, acupuncture helps strengthen neural pathways, leading to stronger muscles and improved coordination and balance. If you suffer from multiple sclerosis, acupuncture will help decrease your symptoms so you can stay physically active much, much longer than your prognosis!

If Parkinson’s disease causes your lack of balance, acupuncture can reverse these effects. A recent study at the University of Seoul, South Korea, reported in CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics that acupuncture reactivates parts of the brain that had become deactivated in the course of Parkinson’s disease. Some of the brain areas involved in Parkinson’s disease include the thalamus and motor areas of the brain. Researchers discovered better neural responses after acupuncture in the basal ganglia, the thalamus and the motor areas of the brain. Because Parkinson’s disease can be very debilitating, scientists are researching the application of acupuncture extensively with positive results.

Gait imbalance is very common in people above the age of 60, but you should not consider this a normal part of aging! Not only does this condition hamper physical activity, it could indicate a more serious condition. If you notice your walk is uneven, I can study your lifestyle habits, symptoms and health history to determine and treat the cause.

Obstruction can occur in the inner ear because of viral infection or allergies. With a viral infection, acupuncture, along with rest and care, can help to strengthen the body to ward off the infection. Allergies can also cause loss of balance when fluid fills the nasal and inner ear cavities as a result of the body’s response to allergens. When the inner ear becomes blocked, acupuncture will very gently help heal the body’s sensitivity to the allergen which decreases the excess fluid build up. Acupuncture also releases the obstruction to restore a clear head and normal balance.

A happy, healthy, and well-balanced you!
