The Funk That Came in From the Cold…and Stayed — Acupuncture Eases Chronic Bronchitis!

Breathe Easier with Acupuncture!

Acupuncture is quickly helpful to all forms of acute and recent bronchitis, as well as all forms of colds, allergies, and asthma!

Bronchitis is a condition where the mucous membranes of the bronchii (the “pipe” between the trachea and the lungs) become inflamed. Symptoms include coughing (either dry or productive), mild fever, fatigue, wheezing and tightness in the chest. There are two distinct types of bronchitis: acute bronchitis, which usually arrives in tandem with a viral illness (a cold or influenza) and chronic bronchitis, which produces a cough that lasts for several weeks or even years. Chronic bronchitis is often linked with tangible environmental factors, such as pollution, cigarette smoke, and prolonged exposure to occupational irritants, such as insulation or asbestos.

Many people report that they were rarely sick, until they got one bad cold or flu, and now they get sick often. This is because the strength of their lung tissue was compromised through the illness causing a person to be prone to it reoccurring.  If a person has a tendency to get frequent colds/flu and they also have poor diet and lifestyle habits, it will further increase the possibility of ongoing, or prolonged illnesses, especially during flu and cold season.

Most occurrences of acute bronchitis are caused by a viral infection and treatment usually involves treating the symptoms, allowing most cases to resolve quickly. Chronic bronchitis is a far more serious health issue, as it limits airflow into the lungs, resulting in shortness of breath, wheezing and the overproduction of sputum. Avoiding irritants and eliminating smoking have been proven to lessen the symptoms of chronic bronchitis.

Acupuncture restores respiratory muscle tone, improves contractility (the ability of muscle tissue to contract), mobility of the diaphragm and can reduce dependence on medications in both acute and chronic cases of bronchitis. Chronic and lingering respiratory problems are helped. The history and examination includes pulse and tongue information as well. Each case is individual, and point sites will vary. There is a deep energy loop between the lung and the kidney, so the front and back central points may be treated to help to clear that loop. The points are on the surface, so it allows you to relax.

Acupuncture is painless, gentle, and effective. Opening the chest through breath work, walking up steep hills, doing regular chest opening exercises, as well as finding supportive avenues to work with grief, can be helpful in reestablishing the health of the lungs. Grief, sadness, anger, and fear are common and reasonable, but remember that joy is your deepest most natural true nature.  Acupuncture helps to restore that joy as your home base, and then breathing becomes smoother again.
