If you’ve overdone it in the sun – – Acupuncture brings sunburn relief!

The weather is gorgeous, everyone is out and about in their gardens, playing or hiking outside, or floating on the water. It’s also very easy to forget how quickly an afternoon in the sun can turn someone into a walking lobster.

Acupuncture to the rescue! It’s not necessarily the first thing you think about when you think about sunburn, but acupuncture will not only help soothe the pain, it will make you feel more relaxed in the process.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, sunburn is a trapping of damp heat in the skin that must be treated by releasing the heat and soothing the accompanying pain. In addition, acupuncture can also give the immune system a boost, and relieve the general fatigue and malaise often present after a major sun exposure.

Besides aftercare, a little prevention goes a very long way — here’s some great advice for more fun than burning in the sun.

  • Seems simple…avoid the sun when it’s at super strength. Don’t stay out for long periods of time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you’re outdoors during this time, keep in mind that you’ll burn faster than at other times of the day.
  • Beware of reflective surfaces. Water or sand can bounce as much as 17% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays back at you.
  • Going to be out in the sun for a while? Use clothing such as cover-ups, long, loose-fitting pants and tops, and wide-brimmed hats to protect you. Choose lightweight fabrics that are cool, but will still give you sun protection. Remember your sunglasses! Eyes can burn, too.
  • Wear sunblock. Sunblock will protect your skin from the sun’s rays, but be aware that many contain questionable chemicals that are not typically regulated. Choose natural varieties from your health food store, and be sure to reapply the sunblock if you have been in the water or have been sweating.
  • Be a shady lady or gentleman! A simple way to avoid sunburn is to go in a shaded area to get out of the sun. If a shaded area is not available, use an umbrella. It will also make it easier for your friends and family to locate you on the beach! Win/win!

Avoid Dehydration — Drink Water and Try Acupuncture!

Chances are — You’re dehydrated! 

For beings that are mostly water, it’s surprising how many people aren’t getting what they need!

Water is so important to our body. Water fills empty spaces and transports blood cells. It dissolves all the body solids and increases oxygen to the cells. It is the glue that keeps the solid parts of cells together. It is the main source of energy production and also regulates energy by osmotic balancing. Everything in your body needs water to live. 

Unfortunately, thirst isn’t always a reliable source of the body’s need for water, especially for children and older adults. Water is lost from the body from sweating, urinating, breathing, and bowel movements. Consider your personal color instead  — a better gauge is the color of your urine. Clear or light-colored urine means you’re well hydrated, whereas a dark yellow or amber color usually signals dehydration. Time to drink more water!

Here’s what can happen if you don’t…

Mild to moderate dehydration is likely to cause:

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual
  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output
  • No wet diapers for three hours for infants
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Severe dehydration, a medical emergency, can cause:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Extreme fussiness or sleepiness in infants and children; irritability and confusion in adults
  • Very dry mouth, skin and mucous membranes
  • Little or no urination — any urine that is produced will be darker than normal
  • Sunken eyes
  • Shriveled and dry skin that lacks elasticity and doesn’t “bounce back” when pinched into a fold
  • In infants, sunken fontanels — the soft spots on the top of a baby’s head
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Rapid breathing
  • No tears when crying
  • Fever
  • In the most serious cases, delirium or unconsciousness

So obviously, we need to pay attention to our hydration levels! Here’s more reasons why water is so important to our bodies.

The following organs as important team players in the role of creating and moving blood: Spleen, Stomach, Heart, Lung, and Liver. Blood needs water to move. If blood does not function properly, then qi (or Life Force) cannot move well either.
